Steve Wynn Profile

Steve Wynn is a name many know who live in the US because of his hotel in Las Vegas. Stephan Alan Wynn was born in Connecticut in 1942. He studied English literature at the University of Pennsylvania earning a BA. He also married in 1963 to Elaine Pascal. They have two daughters together. Four years later he decided to take over his family’s bingo operation in Maryland. He took it over due to his father’s death. Many years later he headed to Las Vegas where he got started in the casino business. Steve Wynn first opened a casino in 1989. His first casino was the Mirage. He then opened the Bellagio in 1998. In 2005 he had a new company called Wynn Resorts.

With this new company he opened his largest resort, the Wynn Las Vegas. The casino cost $2.7 billion to build, which is about double that amount in pounds at the time. By 2006 Wynn was expanding again by building a casino in Macau. It is called the Wynn Macau.
Wynn is not so much a gambler as he is one to provide gamblers with establishments. His desire has been to refurbish Las Vegas. He refurbished or built such casinos as Golden Nugget, Treasure Island, and Encore. Even though he expanded into Macau as early as 2006 it was not until 2010 that he made another move with his Encore casino in Macau.

There is no evidence that Steve Wynn gambles, at least not publicly. He most likely enjoys private games. His deal which involved Howard Hughes in 1971 helped him gain controlling interest of a number of the casinos. He also operated a wine and liquor company in 1972.

It seems more likely that Steve Wynn is a gambler with money in terms of land deals. There was definitely evidence that he could make Las Vegas a little better by upgrading the casinos to get better clientele. Many of his ventures like the Mirage were considered risky ventures because of the luxury provided. Still, Wynn has managed to make a success of all the casinos he has had a hand in. Mirage is one of the most popular hotels and casinos on the strip precisely because it is a beautiful and luxurious casino. The Bellagio pretty much put all other hotels to shame with its opulence and sophistication. The hotel required $1.6 billion to build. Jon Jerde, a famous architect had a hand in the design. The fountain at the Bellagio tends to gain the most attention given that it has a light and water show that goes off at set periods of time.

The Bellagio also sparked other luxury hotels being built like The Venetian, Paris Las Vegas, and Mandalay Bay. Wynn is certainly a smart business man that has his hands deep in the gambling industry. He is also an investor of art. He recently purchased a JM W Turner painting for $35.8 million called Giudecaa La Donna Della Salute. He has a Rembrandt. Much of his art collection is on display at the Bellagio.
